Cleared the TCS NQT and got an interview invite? The interview is where your track and your offer are decided, and it is more predictable than most freshers expect. TCS interviewers keep returning to the same areas: your project, OOPs, DBMS and SQL, operating systems, networking basics, a small coding problem, and a handful of HR questions about relocation, shifts and documents. This guide covers the current TCS NQT process from TCS's own careers page, how Ninja, Digital and Prime interviews differ, what candidates report from recent interviews, 32 common technical questions with short model answers, and managerial and HR questions with sample answers written for Indian freshers.
TCS NQT Interview Process 2026 at a Glance
Here is the process as TCS describes it on its All India NQT Hiring page for the batches of 2024, 2025 and 2026:
- Register on the TCS NextStep portal under the "IT" category and click "Apply For Drive." TCS says this step is mandatory. You also choose the skill you want to be evaluated on, three preferred test centres, and three preferred job cities.
- Take the TCS NQT in person at a TCS iON centre. It is a 190-minute integrated test with a Foundation section and an Advanced section.
- Get shortlisted for a track. TCS says that "based on the test performance, candidates will qualify for Prime, Digital or Ninja interviews."
- Attend the interview. Usually a Technical round, a Managerial round for some tracks, and an HR round. These are sometimes combined into one sitting.
- Document checks and offer. TCS verifies original documents at the interview and again at joining.
TCS NQT test pattern
| Section | Duration |
|---|---|
| Part A: Foundation | 75 minutes |
| Numerical Ability | 25 minutes |
| Verbal Ability | 25 minutes |
| Reasoning Ability | 25 minutes |
| Part B: Advanced | 115 minutes |
| Advanced Quantitative & Reasoning Ability | 25 minutes |
| Advanced Coding | 90 minutes |
| Total | 190 minutes |
TCS encourages everyone to attempt both parts, but the Advanced section is mandatory if you want a Digital or Prime offer.
Eligibility (as listed by TCS)
- Degrees: B.Tech, B.E, M.Tech, M.E, MCA, or M.Sc/M.S in any specialization from AICTE/UGC recognized institutions, batch of 2024, 2025 or 2026.
- Marks: At least 60% or equivalent CGPA in 10th, 12th, Diploma (if any), graduation and post-graduation (if any).
- Backlogs: No pending backlogs when you appear for the selection process.
- Gaps: Total academic gap of no more than 24 months, and gaps must be declared.
- Other: Full-time courses only, no extended education, up to 2 years of work experience, and age between 18 and 28.
TCS says it reviews eligibility "at every stage of the selection process," and discrepancies lead to disqualification. Make sure what you declared on NextStep matches your marksheets exactly.
When the drives run
For the most recent off-campus drive on TCS's page, registration opened on 18 February 2026 and tests ran from 10 March 2026 onwards. That registration is now closed. TCS runs these drives periodically, and campus drives follow each college's placement calendar, so check NextStep and your placement cell for the next one. Separately, TCS iON sells a standalone NQT whose scorecard is valid for two years and can be shared with participating companies, including TCS. That is not the same as applying for a TCS hiring drive on NextStep.
Ninja vs Digital vs Prime: What Changes in the Interview
Your NQT score decides which interview you get. The salary figures below are from TCS's own careers page for candidates with 0 to 1 year of experience. TCS notes that actual compensation depends on work experience and job location.
| Track | CTC (UG) | CTC (PG) | Nature of work (per TCS) | Interview rounds commonly reported |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Prime | 9.09 to 9.30 LPA | 11.59 to 11.80 LPA | Complex projects with advanced technologies, emerging tech, system design with automation and security | Technical + Managerial + HR, with a deeper project and technical discussion |
| Digital | 7.09 to 7.30 LPA | 7.39 to 7.60 LPA | Solution development and integration, internal initiatives on modern technologies, new product work | Technical + HR, often with a Managerial round |
| Ninja | Minimum 3.4 LPA | Minimum 3.6 LPA | Application development and maintenance, systems engineering | Technical + HR, sometimes combined into one round |
Two notes. First, for the March 2026 drive TCS said it was "focusing on Prime and Digital candidates," with Ninja offers based on performance during the hiring process. Second, the round counts in the last column come from prep sites and candidate reports, and they do not fully agree. FACE Prep lists one round for Ninja, two for Digital, and three for Prime, while other guides describe a Managerial round for both Digital and Prime. Your interview invite decides the actual sequence.
One official detail that matters for prep: TCS's FAQ says that once you are shortlisted, "you will be evaluated predominantly on the skill chosen" at registration, in addition to the usual interview. If you picked Java, Python, or another skill, expect most technical questions to be in that skill.
The TCS Interview Rounds Explained
Technical Round (TR)
The longest and most important round. Expect questions on your final-year project, the programming language you chose, OOPs, DBMS and SQL, operating systems, and basic networking. Many candidates are also asked to write a simple program or SQL query on paper or a shared screen. Interviewers tend to go deep on whatever is on your resume, so anything listed there is fair game.
Managerial Round (MR)
Mostly reported for Digital and Prime. It is less about syntax and more about how you think and work: handling deadlines, team conflict, learning a new technology quickly, and your flexibility on role, location and shift. A senior employee usually takes this round.
HR Round
A fit and logistics check. Common topics are why you want to join TCS, relocation, night or rotational shifts, any service agreement in your offer, gaps in education, and your documents. Answer honestly and positively. Saying no to relocation or shifts without a reason is one of the few ways to lose an offer at this stage.
Combined panels
Do not be surprised if all three happen together. Candidate reports on Glassdoor describe panels with an HR person and two technical interviewers in one sitting, and others describe a combined "HR + Technical" second round.
Documents to carry
TCS asks candidates to have all X, XII, Diploma (if applicable), UG and PG marksheets up to the latest semester, plus degree certificates, and says originals are verified at the interview. Candidates with work experience need experience or relieving letters showing joining and last working dates.
TCS NQT Interview Experience: What Candidates Report
Recent candidate reviews on Glassdoor (2025) describe interviews that are mostly basic but strict about fundamentals:
- A Digital-track candidate in Pune said the technical round covered their projects, OOPs concepts, DBMS and basic SQL queries.
- Another candidate was given a sheet with two SQL questions and one easy coding question.
- Another listed method overriding as a specific question.
- One candidate had a combined HR and technical round where relocation was discussed and the technical questions were "very basic ones" from their resume.
- Another reported that the interviewer reacted badly to repeated apologising and to hedging with "I think," and spent time on why 10th and 12th results belong on a resume.
The pattern across reports: the questions are rarely hard, but vague answers, not knowing your own project, and hesitation on basics are what fail people. Speak in clear, complete statements.
TCS Technical Interview Questions for Freshers (With Short Answers)
These are the questions that come up most often across prep guides and candidate reports. Keep your answers short, then add an example if the interviewer wants more.
About you and your project
1. Tell me about yourself.
Give a 60 to 90 second answer: your degree and college, your main technical skill, your project in one line, and why you want to start your career at TCS. See our guide on how to introduce yourself in an interview for sample answers you can adapt.
2. Explain your final-year project.
Use four parts: the problem, your solution, the tech stack, and the result. For example: "We built a web app that helps small clinics manage appointments. I built the backend in Java with Spring Boot and MySQL, and the team of three finished it in four months. It cut double bookings during our testing at a local clinic." Be ready to draw the architecture or explain any table in your database.
3. What was your role in the project, and what was the hardest problem you solved?
Name your specific part, not the team's. Pick one real problem (a slow query, a login bug, an integration issue), say what you tried, and what finally worked.
Programming and OOPs
4. What are the four pillars of OOP?
Encapsulation (bundling data and methods and restricting direct access), Abstraction (showing only essential features and hiding the details), Inheritance (a class acquiring properties of another), and Polymorphism (one interface, many forms, through overloading and overriding).
5. What is the difference between a class and an object?
A class is a blueprint that defines properties and behaviour. An object is an instance of that class created in memory. "Car" is a class; a specific car with its own colour and number is an object.
6. What is the difference between method overloading and method overriding?
Overloading is the same method name with different parameters in the same class, resolved at compile time. Overriding is a subclass providing its own version of a method that is already defined in its parent class, with the same signature, resolved at runtime. Overloading is compile-time polymorphism; overriding is runtime polymorphism.
7. What is the difference between an abstract class and an interface in Java?
An abstract class can have instance variables, constructors, and both abstract and concrete methods, and a class can extend only one. An interface defines a contract; its fields are public, static and final, it can have default and static methods since Java 8, and a class can implement many interfaces. Use an abstract class for shared base behaviour and an interface for a capability many unrelated classes share.
8. What is a constructor? Can a constructor be private?
A constructor is a special method with the same name as the class that initializes a new object and has no return type. Yes, it can be private. That stops other classes from creating objects directly, which is how the Singleton pattern works.
9. What is the difference between == and .equals() in Java?== compares references, meaning whether two variables point to the same object. .equals() compares content, if the class overrides it, as String does. Two different String objects containing "TCS" are equal by .equals() but not necessarily by ==.
10. What is the difference between final, finally and finalize?final is a keyword: a final variable cannot be reassigned, a final method cannot be overridden, and a final class cannot be extended. finally is a block after try/catch that always runs, used for cleanup like closing files. finalize() is an old method meant for cleanup before garbage collection, and it is deprecated in modern Java.
11. What is the difference between call by value and call by reference?
In call by value, the function gets a copy, so changes do not affect the original. In call by reference, the function works on the original variable. C uses call by value and uses pointers to get reference-like behaviour; C++ supports true references. Java is always pass by value, but for objects the value passed is a copy of the reference, so the method can change the object's fields.
DBMS and SQL
12. What is the difference between DBMS and RDBMS?
A DBMS is software for storing and managing data. An RDBMS stores data in related tables with rows and columns, enforces relationships through keys, and uses SQL. MySQL, Oracle and PostgreSQL are RDBMS examples.
13. What is the difference between a primary key, a unique key and a foreign key?
A primary key uniquely identifies each row and cannot be NULL; a table has only one. A unique key also prevents duplicate values but usually allows NULL, and a table can have several. A foreign key is a column that refers to the primary key of another table, which keeps the relationship between tables valid.
14. What is normalization? Explain 1NF, 2NF and 3NF.
Normalization organizes tables to reduce redundancy and update anomalies. 1NF: every column holds atomic values with no repeating groups. 2NF: in 1NF, and every non-key column depends on the whole primary key, not part of a composite key. 3NF: in 2NF, and no non-key column depends on another non-key column (no transitive dependency).
15. What is the difference between DELETE, TRUNCATE and DROP?
DELETE is a DML command that removes selected rows using WHERE and can be rolled back inside a transaction. TRUNCATE removes all rows at once, is faster, and has no WHERE clause; in MySQL and Oracle it cannot be rolled back. DROP removes the whole table, including its structure.
16. What are the types of joins in SQL?
INNER JOIN returns matching rows from both tables. LEFT JOIN returns all rows from the left table plus matches from the right. RIGHT JOIN is the reverse. FULL OUTER JOIN returns all rows from both, with NULLs where there is no match. CROSS JOIN returns every combination of rows, and a SELF JOIN joins a table to itself, for example employees and their managers.
17. What are ACID properties?
Atomicity (a transaction happens completely or not at all), Consistency (the database moves from one valid state to another), Isolation (concurrent transactions do not interfere with each other), and Durability (once committed, changes survive a crash). A bank transfer is the standard example.
18. Write a query to find the second highest salary.SELECT MAX(salary) FROM employees WHERE salary < (SELECT MAX(salary) FROM employees);
Mention that you could also use DENSE_RANK() to get the Nth highest salary, which handles ties cleanly.
Operating Systems
19. What is the difference between a process and a thread?
A process is a program in execution with its own memory space. A thread is a smaller unit of execution inside a process, and threads of the same process share its memory. Threads are cheaper to create and switch, but a bug in one thread can affect the whole process.
20. What is a deadlock, and what conditions cause it?
A deadlock is when two or more processes wait forever for resources held by each other. It needs four conditions at the same time: mutual exclusion, hold and wait, no preemption, and circular wait. It can be handled by prevention (breaking one condition), avoidance (for example, the Banker's algorithm), or detection and recovery.
21. What is virtual memory and paging?
Paging splits a process's memory into fixed-size pages and physical memory into frames of the same size, so a process does not need one continuous block of RAM. Virtual memory uses this to let programs use more memory than physically available by keeping some pages on disk. When a needed page is not in RAM, a page fault occurs and the OS loads it.
22. What is the difference between a mutex and a semaphore?
A mutex is a lock that only one thread can hold at a time, and only the thread that locked it should unlock it. A semaphore is a counter that allows up to N threads to access a resource at once. A binary semaphore behaves like a lock but has no ownership.
Computer Networks
23. Name the layers of the OSI model.
From bottom to top: Physical, Data Link, Network, Transport, Session, Presentation, Application. A common memory trick is "Please Do Not Throw Sausage Pizza Away."
24. What is the difference between TCP and UDP?
TCP is connection-oriented and reliable: it sets up a connection, guarantees delivery and order, and retransmits lost packets. It is used for web pages, email and file transfer. UDP is connectionless and faster with no delivery guarantee, used for video calls, live streaming, gaming and DNS lookups.
25. What happens when you type a URL into a browser?
The browser finds the server's IP address through DNS, opens a TCP connection (plus a TLS handshake for HTTPS), and sends an HTTP request. The server returns a response with HTML, and the browser parses it, requests CSS, JavaScript and images, and renders the page.
26. What is the difference between an IP address and a MAC address?
An IP address is a logical address at the network layer that identifies a device on a network and can change. A MAC address is a 48-bit physical address assigned to the network interface card, used at the data link layer within a local network.
Data structures and coding
27. What is the difference between an array and a linked list?
An array stores elements in continuous memory with a fixed size and gives O(1) access by index, but inserting in the middle is slow. A linked list stores nodes that point to the next node, grows dynamically and makes insertion easy, but access by position takes O(n).
28. What is the difference between a stack and a queue?
A stack is Last In, First Out, like a pile of plates, with push and pop operations; it is used for function calls and undo. A queue is First In, First Out, like a ticket line, with enqueue and dequeue; it is used for scheduling and buffering.
29. Reverse a string without using a built-in reverse function.
Convert the string to a character array, place one pointer at the start and one at the end, swap the characters, and move both pointers toward the middle until they meet. Time complexity is O(n). Say the approach first, then write the code.
30. Check whether a number is prime.
Numbers below 2 are not prime. For anything else, check whether any number from 2 up to the square root of n divides it evenly. If none does, it is prime. Checking only up to the square root is the detail interviewers look for.
31. Find the second largest element in an array in one pass.
Keep two variables, largest and second. For each element, if it is greater than largest, move largest into second and update largest. Otherwise, if it is greater than second and not equal to largest, update second. This is O(n) and handles duplicates. Mention what you would return if all elements are equal.
32. What is SDLC, and what is the difference between Waterfall and Agile?
SDLC (Software Development Life Cycle) is the process of building software: requirements, design, development, testing, deployment and maintenance. Waterfall runs these phases one after another, which suits fixed requirements. Agile works in short iterations called sprints, with frequent feedback and changes, which suits projects where requirements evolve.
For more practice beyond this list, our interview questions for freshers guide covers common general questions, and the Interview Sidekick question bank has 16,000+ questions from 1,200+ companies, each with a suggested answer.
TCS Managerial Round Questions (With Sample Answers)
1. Tell me about a time you had a conflict in a team.
"During our final-year project, two of us wanted to use different databases. Instead of arguing, we each listed the pros and cons against our actual requirements and showed them to our guide. We went with MySQL because the whole team already knew it, which saved us about two weeks. I learned that it is easier to agree on criteria first and the decision second."
2. What would you do if you could not meet a deadline?
"I would tell my lead as early as possible, not on the last day. I would explain what is done, what is left, and what is blocking me, and suggest options, such as delivering the most important part first or asking for help on one piece. Then I would put in the extra effort to close the gap."
3. How quickly can you learn a new technology? Give an example.
"In my sixth semester I had to learn React for a hackathon in about ten days. I followed the official tutorial, built a small to-do app first, then applied it to our project. We submitted a working prototype. I learn fastest by building something small right away."
4. What if you are assigned to a technology or role you did not choose, like testing or support?
"I would take it as a chance to learn how real projects work end to end. Every role teaches something useful, and testing or support would give me a strong understanding of the system. I would do it well, keep building my development skills, and discuss my interests with my manager when the time is right."
5. Your team needs to work over a weekend to fix a production issue. What do you do?
"I would be there. Production issues affect the client, and at the start of my career I want to be someone the team can rely on. I would also make sure I understand what went wrong so it is less likely to happen again."
6. Why should we hire you?
"I have a good base in Java, SQL and core CS subjects, which I have used in my project and internship. I learn quickly, I am comfortable working in a team, and I am flexible on location and shifts. I am looking for a company where I can learn and grow for the long term, and TCS gives freshers that through structured training and a wide range of projects."
TCS HR Interview Questions (With Sample Answers)
The HR round is usually short, but your answers here are taken at face value. Be honest, positive and specific. For a wider list, see our guide to the top HR interview questions and answers.
1. Why do you want to join TCS?
"TCS works with clients in many industries, which means I can learn different domains and technologies early in my career. It also has a structured onboarding and learning programme for freshers. I want to build a long career, and TCS offers the scale and stability to do that."
2. What do you know about TCS?
Keep it factual: TCS is part of the Tata Group, one of India's largest IT services companies, working with clients worldwide across sectors such as banking, retail and manufacturing. Mention one recent thing you read on tcs.com, such as a product or a news release, to show genuine interest.
3. Are you willing to relocate anywhere in India?
Prep guides report that TCS expects a yes. "Yes, I am willing to relocate. I see it as part of starting my career, and I am comfortable adjusting to a new city." If you have a genuine constraint, such as a family medical situation, say so briefly and calmly, but understand it can affect your offer.
4. Are you comfortable with night shifts or rotational shifts?
Many client projects run in other time zones. "Yes. I understand some projects support clients in other time zones, and I can adjust my schedule when the project needs it."
5. Are you comfortable with the service agreement?
Prep guides list the service agreement as an HR round topic. Its current terms are not published on TCS's careers page, so read whatever your offer or joining documents say before the interview. If asked: "Yes, I have read the terms in the documents I received, and I am comfortable with them. I plan to build my career at TCS for the long term." Do not agree to something you have not read; ask for the details if you have not received them.
6. What are your strengths and weaknesses?
"My strength is that I stay consistent. I worked on my project every week of the semester rather than at the last minute. One weakness is that I used to hesitate to ask questions in a group. I have been working on it by asking at least one question in every team meeting, and it has helped me learn faster." Our guide on how to answer "What are your weaknesses?" has more examples.
7. Where do you see yourself in five years?
"I see myself as a strong developer who has worked on real client projects, knows one domain well, and has started guiding new team members. I would like to grow into a technical lead role at TCS."
8. Is there a gap in your education? Why?
Answer honestly and briefly, and connect it to what you did during that time. TCS requires gaps to be declared and checks documents, so your answer must match what you wrote on NextStep.
9. Do you have any questions for us?
Always ask one or two. Good options: "What does the learning journey look like for new joiners in my track?" or "What skills should I work on before joining?"
How to Prepare for the TCS NQT Interview
- Revise the skill you chose at registration first. TCS says shortlisted candidates are evaluated predominantly on it. If you chose Java, revise OOPs in Java, collections, exceptions and strings in depth.
- Know your resume line by line. Every skill, project, internship and certification you list can become a question. Remove anything you cannot explain.
- Revise the core four: OOPs, DBMS and SQL, operating systems and computer networks, using the 32 questions above as a checklist.
- Practice coding on paper. Candidates report being handed sheets for SQL and simple coding questions. Practice writing small programs (reverse a string, prime check, second largest) without an IDE.
- Prepare your logistics answers. Decide your honest answers on relocation, shifts and the service agreement before you walk in.
- Organise your documents. Keep originals and photocopies of all marksheets and certificates in order, as TCS lists them.
- Practice answers out loud. Knowing an answer and saying it clearly under pressure are different skills. Interview Sidekick's AI mock interviews let you answer questions out loud and get feedback on your answers and communication, which helps with the hesitant, "I think" style answers candidates report being marked down for.
- Watch out for fake offers. TCS states it does not ask candidates to deposit money, does not send offers from Gmail, Yahoo or similar email IDs, and does not use external agencies to interview or make offers on its behalf.
Frequently Asked Questions
What questions are asked in the TCS NQT interview?
The technical round usually covers your final-year project, the programming language or skill you chose at registration, OOPs, DBMS and SQL, operating systems, computer networks and one or two simple coding or SQL problems. The HR round covers why TCS, relocation, night shifts, any service agreement, gaps and documents. Managerial rounds focus on teamwork, deadlines and flexibility.
How many interview rounds are there in TCS NQT?
Usually two or three: Technical, Managerial and HR. Candidate reports and prep sites suggest Ninja interviews are often Technical plus HR, sometimes combined into one round, while Digital and Prime interviews more often include a Managerial round and a deeper technical discussion. Some candidates face all three interviewers in a single panel.
Is the TCS NQT interview difficult for freshers?
For most freshers, the questions are basic, but the interviewers expect clear, confident answers on fundamentals and on your own project. Candidates who struggle usually cannot explain their project, hesitate on OOPs or SQL basics, or give vague answers. Prime interviews go deeper than Ninja or Digital.
What is the salary for TCS Ninja, Digital and Prime in 2026?
According to TCS's careers page for the batches of 2024 to 2026, Prime offers 9.09 to 9.30 LPA for UG and 11.59 to 11.80 LPA for PG freshers, and Digital offers 7.09 to 7.30 LPA for UG and 7.39 to 7.60 LPA for PG. The minimum Ninja CTC is 3.4 LPA for UG and 3.6 LPA for PG. Actual pay depends on experience and job location.
How should I answer "Are you willing to relocate?" in the TCS HR interview?
Say yes if you can, and say it clearly: "Yes, I am willing to relocate anywhere in India. I see it as part of starting my career." TCS lets you pick three preferred job cities during registration, but the HR round checks that you are flexible. If you have a genuine constraint, explain it briefly and honestly.
Which skill should I choose during TCS NQT registration?
Choose the skill you know best and can defend under questioning, not the one that sounds most impressive. TCS says shortlisted candidates are evaluated predominantly on the skill they chose, so your technical round will lean heavily on it.
